There are two ways that people can opt in to your text message list. One, they can use their cell phone to text in your keyword to your short code or two, they can sign up online through a fill in the blank sign up form similar to the one you probably use for your email list.

Good stuff, Kim. The "mobile house list" will certainly be a powerful tool for marketers over the next decade.

But I wanted to make you aware of a new company that DOES allow marketers to rent a permission-ready list of opted-in mobile phone users. It's called Sayso (www.saysomobile.com).

Mobile phone owners opt-in to Sayso and are paid real money for receiving targeted text ads. And because everyone places a different value on their time and attention, Sayso subscribers set the price they're paid each time they get a message.

Advertisers can then build a targeted list, set a maximum price they're willing to pay for each individual and send their message.

Unlike using a "house list," Sayso allows marketers to find new customers (not just the loyal ones who opt-in) and they can get up and running to a large audience quickly.

Great comments, Kim. May I add that getting started in SMS is not an expensive process. Most companies can be up and running and live in less then 30 minutes for a few hundred dollars....

This is easy to test out, and one that won't break your marketing budget.
